The idea of increasing your reach by millions in minutes is absurd right? If you’re just looking at the number of email subscribers and current followers, then yes, it’s a wacky notion.

However, when you consider your network reach, meaning, the number of people you can reach when your supporters tap into their social networks, it’s a different story.

Consider that, on average, our clients have an email list size of about 140K. Those 140K, on average, reach 40M people with their first degree social networks. We call this the “potential reach” of your supporters on social media.

Where it gets really interesting, is that on average, the top 5% of your supporters (by Klout) account for 85% of that “potential reach” on social. We found this across the board, not just the outliers.

First, a key distinction is “potential” reach versus actual reach.

Potential reach is the ability to reach the millions of people in the networks of your influencers.

For example, we can show your top 10 influencers and their reach, as we do with our free audience reports, but you need to first connect with these influencers to apply your reach. Here’s an example from Representative Takano’s office on how they incorporated influencer engagement and social listening into their constituent engagement strategy.

Potential reach starts by following your influencers (most likely on Twitter).

Potential versus actual reach is kinda the difference between email open and conversion rates. While your influencers will most likely see the message your send them (i.e. an open), they still need to take action and resend your amazing content to their networks (i.e. conversion).

Getting influencers to share your content depends on how you approach influencers and your overall relationship.
